Origin and history
The hotel Prouvost is a private hotel built in 1878 in Roubaix, in the Northern Department, for Charles Prouvost and his wife Marie Sophie Scrépel. This building, located near the textile factory of its sponsor, reflects the prestige of the cloth and china satin manufacturers at the end of the 19th century. Its location on Grand Chemin Street, a major artery in the city, highlights its social and economic importance.
Although the street façade is cemented, the hotel's heritage interest lies in its exceptional interior decorations. Among them are the entrance hall, three lounges on the ground floor – including a Chinese living room with lacquered panels – and a chapel on the first floor. The music salon houses a ceiling painted by Tony Vergnolet in 1888, while the honorary staircase and its cage complete this remarkable ensemble.
Subsequently purchased by the Primary Health Insurance Fund, the Prouvost Hotel has been registered for historical monuments since 12 August 1998. The protected elements include the back façade with its porch, roofs, living rooms, lobby, staircase, and chapel. Today, the building belongs to a public institution of the state, bearing witness to its industrial and artistic heritage.
Its precise location, at 19 rue du Grand-Chemin and 6 rue Rémy-Cogghe, makes it an architectural landmark of Roubaix. The Insee code of the commune (59512) confirms its anchoring in the department of the North, in the heart of the Hauts-de-France, region marked by textile history and bourgeois heritage of the nineteenth century.
