Origin and history

The Radigue Hotel is a listed historical monument, located at 15 rue du Bercail in Alençon, in the department of Orne in Normandy. Built in the 18th century, it embodies the civil architecture of this period, with a sober but elegant facade, marked by five wrought iron balconies and a cochère door opening onto an inner courtyard. The building is representative of the homes of the nobility or the rich local bourgeoisie.

Inside, two lounges preserve remarkable woodwork, typical of the eighteenth century. In the old dining room, canvases embedded in the hazes represent hunting and dining scenes, while the large living room features hazes decorated with mirrors and paintings depicting childhood scenes and landscapes. These decorative elements bear witness to the artistic refinement of the time.

Hotel Radigue has been listed as a historical monument since 22 April 1960 for its facades, roofs and wooded lounges. The Rue du Bercail, formerly called Rue de la Personne, is mentioned by Balzac in his novel La Vieille Fille, suggesting that this hotel might have inspired the author. Today, there remains a preserved example of the architectural heritage of France.

The protected elements include facades, roofs and two lounges located on the ground floor, according to the 1960 order. The exact address, 15 rue du Bercail, is referenced in the Mérimée base, confirming its precise location in the city centre of Alençon, near the Notre Dame Basilica.
