Origin and history

The Ravel d'Esclapon hotel, also known as the Boyer de Fonscolombe hotel, is a private hotel located in the heart of Aix-en-Provence, in the Bouches-du-Rhône department. Built between the end of the 17th century and the second quarter of the 18th century, it illustrates the civil architecture of this period in Provence. Its facades, roofs and garden with fountain and decorated walls were protected by classification and registration orders in 1990.

The composer Emmanuel de Fonscolombe (1810–75) resided in this hotel, marking his cultural history. The building is now owned by the municipality of Aix-en-Provence. His identified architect, Jean Jaubert, supervised his construction, combining baroque and classic elements specific to the Aixian town planning of the time.

The hotel was included in the inventory of historic monuments as early as 1989, before its interior and exterior elements enjoyed enhanced protection in 1990. Its exact location at 39 Cardinale Street makes it a witness to the aristocratic and artistic heritage of the city, linked to influential families such as the Boyer de Fonscolombe.
