Origin and history
Hotel Reboul, located at 15 rue du Port in Clermont-Ferrand, is an emblematic example of 18th-century civil architecture in this city. The monument is distinguished by its inner courtyard surrounded by buildings on its four sides, a disposition typical of the mansions of the time. The windows on the first floor are decorated with wrought iron balconies, characterized by symmetrical patterns in bars, C-rolls and spirals, organized around a slightly flattened central circle. These decorative elements reflect the craftsmanship and taste for ornamentation of this period.
The main entrance to the hotel overlooks a arch arched vestibule in basket cove, molded and equipped with a salient key, typical of classical architecture. This vestibule leads to a stairwell whose access is marked by two symmetrical crawling arches, falling on a hanging key decorated with foliage. The wrought iron ramp on the staircase, particularly designed, reinforces the luxurious character of the building. These architectural details underline the social importance of the owners and the role of these private hotels as places of representation in the 18th century Clermont society.
The Hotel Reboul was partially protected under the Historical Monuments by an order of 15 July 1985, covering facades, roofs, entrance passage and interior staircase with its wrought iron ramp. This official inscription recognizes the heritage value of the building, both for its architecture and for its testimony on the way of life of local elites at that time. The monument, although little documented about its original owners, remains an important milestone in understanding the urban planning and aesthetics of Clermont-Ferrand under the Ancien Régime.
The location of the hotel, in the historic centre of Clermont-Ferrand, near the commercial axes of the time, suggests its integration into a dynamic urban fabric. Private hotels like this often served as residences for wealthy families, wealthy merchants or members of the nobility of dress, playing a central role in the social and economic life of the city. Their presence helped shape Clermont-Ferrand's architectural identity, combining local influences and national trends.
