Origin and history
Hotel Regin, located at 36 rue de la Rodade in Clermont-Ferrand, is a historic monument consisting of two separate houses, separated by an inner courtyard. This architectural ensemble, dating from the 15th and 16th centuries, is distinguished by its staircase in round tower and vaulted galleries. The house overlooking the street houses a ground floor dedicated to commercial use, while the floors connect the two bodies of buildings by open steps to the courtyard.
The interior courtyard houses notable sculptural elements, including a pillar adorned with a high relief representing Saint-Christophe, located between the staircase and the ground floor gallery. On the first floor, the bahut of the gallery presents a carved Annunciation, dated the sixteenth century. These decorations, as well as the arcade of the entrance passage, were classified as Historic Monument by decree on January 16, 1924, highlighting their heritage value.
The architecture of Hotel Regin illustrates the construction techniques and artistic influences of the medieval and Renaissance periods in Auvergne. The presence of religious bas-reliefs, such as St.Christophus (the protector of travelers) and the Annunciation, reflects the importance of Christian symbolism in the urban homes of the time. The layout of the spaces, mixing habitat, trade and traffic, bears witness to a social and economic organization typical of the Auvergne cities at the end of the Middle Ages.
