Origin and history

The Hotel Richardot, located in Dole in the Jura, is a historic monument built in the 16th century. It embodies Renaissance civil architecture, with a body of houses crossed by a cochère alley and a wing in return housing a stone screw staircase tower. The dovecote and the sheds, added in the 17th century, complete this ensemble, which was renovated at the end of the 19th century to incorporate a large staircase and a central corridor serving the floor.

The hotel owes its name to François Richardot, bishop of Arras and chaplain of Emperor Charles Quint, who sponsored it. The sources attribute its construction to the master mason Richard Maire, thus highlighting the local know-how. The building, which has been partially protected since 2004 (facades, roofs and spiral staircases), illustrates the prestige of the ecclesiastical elites of the time, mixing residential and symbolic functions.

The interior redevelopment of the 19th century transformed the distribution of spaces, with a monumental staircase leading to a large apartment upstairs. This project reflects the successive adaptations of the monument to the needs of its occupants, while preserving original structural elements. Today, Hotel Richardot remains a major architectural testimony of the Franche-Comté, linked to the religious and political history of the region under the influence of the Habsburgs.
