Origin and history
Hotel Rigoley de Chevigny is a private hotel located in the preserved area of Dijon, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Built in 1675, it illustrates the bourgeois civil architecture of the 17th and 18th centuries, between courtyard and garden, with a pavilion or orangery at the bottom of the park. Its location, between the Carmelite and Cordeliers convents, reflects the religious and aristocratic urban planning of the time.
The hotel had two major phases of construction: the first about 1675, followed by an extension in 1725 by Pierre I. Rigoley de Chevigny and his nephew. The L-shaped building, closed by a bahut wall crowned with a balustrade, preserves remarkable elements such as two vaulted rooms in a full hanger cradle in the basement. One housed a kitchen with a cast iron fireplace, the other a dining room decorated with arabesques in gypsum. These spaces bear witness to the home life and decorative techniques of the time.
Although the interior was renovated in the late 19th century, the hotel was partially protected in 1928 with the inscription of its 18th century pavilion. In 2001, the entire building, including the gate, the street wall and the courtyard and garden floors, was listed as historical monuments. These successive protections underline its heritage importance in the Dijon landscape.
Today, the Hotel Rigoley de Chevigny remains a significant example of the architectural and social evolution of Dijon, between medieval heritage and classical modernity. Its inscription in the protected area and its proximity to major religious buildings make it a privileged witness to the city's urban history.
