Origin and history

The Royal Hotel de Maisons-Laffitte was designed in 1910 by architect Holl for a luxury hotel chain, which went bankrupt in 1914. This iconic neoclassical building was bought in 1920 by a medical clinic before being transformed into a health facility, especially for the military. Its majestic architecture, marked by three floors and an elegant facade, reflects the original ambition of its sponsors.

Ranked Historic Monument by decree on December 20, 1930, the hotel became state property in 1948. The General Mutual of National Education (MGEN) installed its services there in 1947 after interior work in 1968, including a mezzanine above the dining room. This place, symbol of local heritage, experienced a period of abandonment from 2010, before its rehabilitation between 2018 and 2021 in standing residence.

The last restoration, conducted by the operator Histoire et Patrimoine and architect Bertrand Monchecourt, followed the original plans of Paul Tournon (1930). A third floor and a roof inspired by the drawings of Tournon were added, bringing the number of dwellings to 56. This project, costing €7 million, has given the Royal Hotel back its splendour, while adapting to contemporary uses.

The building, located at 1 Henry Marcel Avenue, today embodies a balance between heritage preservation and modernity. Its history, marked by changes of vocation (hotel, clinic, residence), illustrates the social and economic changes of the Paris region in the 20th century. Legal protections and recent interventions guarantee its sustainability as an architectural and cultural witness.
