Origin and history
Hotel Saint-Léonard is a private hotel built in the second half of the 18th century, between 1788 and 1797, in Falaise, Calvados department. Sponsored by Richard Le Vallois, Marquis de Saint-Léonard, this monument illustrates the civil architecture of the time by its elegance and its integration into the urban landscape, close to Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais church. The architect Nicolas Gondouin, already known for his work on the City Hall of Falaise, drew up the plans, harmoniously combining the aesthetic codes of the Enlightenment.
The construction ended in 1797, marking the completion of an ambitious project for a noble local. The hotel is distinguished by its terrace overlooking a valley, a remarkable landscape element that will be protected later. The communes, partially destroyed during the 1944 bombings, were partly rebuilt, while the original gate disappeared during the post-war reconstruction work of the city. These historical hazards bear witness to the upheavals of Falaise in the 20th century.
In terms of heritage, the Hôtel Saint-Léonard enjoys double protection as historical monuments. The terrace was registered as early as 1968 for its landscape interest, while facades, roofs and some interiors (living, dining room with their decor) were classified in 1974. These measures highlight the architectural and artistic value of the building, as well as its role in the Fausian heritage. Today, the hotel remains a valuable testimony of Norman aristocratic urbanism on the eve of the French Revolution.
The site is located at 12 rue Victor-Hugo, about 100 meters from the parish church, on the banks of a tributary stream of the Ante. This central location, in a historical district, reinforces its anchoring in the urban fabric of Falaise. The available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum, Merimée base) confirm its status as an emblematic monument, while specifying the protected elements and hazards of its recent history.
