Origin and history

Hotel Tanqueray de la Montbrière is an iconic monument located in Coutances, in the Manche department in Normandy. Dated from the seventeenth century, it perfectly illustrates the architecture of the local bourgeois houses under the Ancien Régime. Its home, side wings, interior decorations, courtyard and garden have been protected since 1992.

The building, located at 2-4 rue du Palais-de-Justice, reflects the prestige of the Cotançase bourgeoisie of the time. Its inscription to historical monuments covers the entire building, including its interior and exterior decorative elements, as well as its garden and courtyard. This private hotel reflects the lifestyle and architectural aspirations of the Norman provincial elite.

Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its heritage importance. Although little detailed information about its occupants or its specific history is mentioned, its occasional opening to the public, as at European Heritage Days, makes it possible to discover this jewel of local heritage.
