Origin and history
The hotel Thiadot, also known as "the house of the bailli", is a private hotel located in Luxeuil-les-Bains (Haute-Saône), Place de la Baille, close to the Abbey. Probably from 1373, it is considered the oldest civilian building in the city. Its L-shaped structure, with a north wing ending in an octagonal tower, reflects additions from the 15th, 16th and 18th centuries. The southern façade, made of 15th-century stone, has carved sills and rubble, while the galleries (stone on the 1st floor, wood on the upper floors) connect the building bodies.
Ranked a Historic Monument in 1999, the hotel was built in the medieval fortified enclosure of Luxeuil. Its architecture blends defensive elements, such as the crenellated stair tower, with civil decorations, such as capitals decorated with faces and foliage. The slot-protected platform suggests a function that is both residential and symbolic, linked to local power. The city now owns the municipal library and the Maurice-Beaumont Museum.
The building illustrates the architectural evolution of Luxeuil, from medieval origins (XIVth century) to 18th century changes. Its classification underlines its heritage value, both for its seniority and for its hybrid stylistic characteristics. The 18th-century wooden galleries, added to the older structures, show a continuous adaptation to the needs of the occupants, while preserving Gothic elements such as the bay crumbs.
