Origin and history

Hotel Vachier, located at 17 rue du Port in Clermont-Ferrand, is a 15th century mansion listed as a Historic Monument. Its façade retains a remarkable Gothic door, decorated with Tuscan pilasters and a triglyphic frieze decorated with roses. The wooden vantals, ground with rectangular panels, are surmounted by a baluster impost, while a murmur carved with an acanthe leaf separates the two shutters.

The inner courtyard houses a circular staircase tower, accessible by a 15th century door, which houses a staircase typical of medieval architecture. These elements, protected by decree in 1984, reflect the craftsmanship of the time and the importance of private hotels in the urban fabric of Clermont-Ferrand.

The building, although partially preserved, offers a rare example of Gothic civil architecture in Auvergne. Its present state makes it possible to appreciate the decorative and structural details characteristic of bourgeois houses of the 15th century, while highlighting the challenges of preserving historical monuments in urban areas.
