Origin and history
The Hotel de la Sirène is an emblematic building of Mont-Saint-Michel, located in the Manche department in Normandy. Built probably in the 15th century, its wood-paned facade is distinguished by its two corbelled floors, typical of medieval architecture. The monument occupies a strategic location on the Grande Rue, halfway between the village entrance and the Saint-Pierre church, reflecting its integration into the historic urban fabric of this exceptional site.
In the 21st century, the hotel was reassigned: its floor houses a crepery, while the ground floor houses a shop offering various items. This contemporary adaptation contrasts with its medieval past, while preserving its heritage character. The facades and roofs of the building were also classified as historical monuments on 28 February 1936, highlighting their architectural value and importance in local history.
The building illustrates the duality between conservation and modernity at Mont-Saint-Michel, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its architecture, marked by medieval construction techniques, offers a tangible testimony of daily and commercial life in this fortified city, while adapting to current tourist needs. No precise information is available about its first occupants or its original function, but its location suggests a role related to reception or commerce from medieval times.
