Origin and history

The Hôtel du Régent is a hotel located at 26 rue du Général Mangin in Villers-Cotterêts, in the department of Aisne ( Hauts-de-France). This monument, probably built in the seventeenth century, underwent major modifications in the eighteenth century, including piercings, facade renovations and additions of interior decorations. Its architecture consists of a main building body and two wings in return of square, typical of the mansions of this time.

The building has been partially protected as historical monuments since 1993. The classified elements include facades and roofs (except parts of the wings), woodwork and the fireplace of the Palatine room, as well as the corner tower staircase with its wrought iron ramp. The cobblestone floor of the courtyard and its mouthpiece are also part of the preserved elements, reflecting the original use of the hotel as a place of reception and passage.

The location of the hotel, in a city marked by its royal history (especially linked to François I), suggests its past role in the accommodation of travellers of brand name. The transformations of the 18th century, such as the interior decorations and the modernization of the drills, illustrate the evolution of the standards of comfort and aristocratic aesthetics under the Old Regime. Today, the building retains traces of these times, although its current use (visits, rentals, accommodation) is not specified in the available sources.
