Origin and history

The former Gendarmerie of Donzère is a building built in the 18th century, located in the Drôme department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. This building, now classified as a Historical Monument, is distinguished by protected architectural elements, including its street façade, its gate with gate, and its corresponding roof. These features reflect the style and construction techniques of the time, while emphasizing its past use as a place of public order.

The inscription of this monument in the inventory of Historical Monuments by decree of 23 February 1981 also concerns its interior staircase, equipped with a wrought iron ramp, an artistic and technical detail typical of the eighteenth century. Although the available sources do not specify the exact conditions of its construction or its historic occupants, its classification reflects its heritage importance. The building is located at 25 Rue Sarcey de Sutières, an address corresponding to the old National Road 541, illustrating its integration into the urban and road fabric of Donzère.

In modern times, the gendarmerie played a central role in the administrative and security organization of the localities, especially in rural areas or developing towns such as Donzère. These buildings served not only as barracks for law enforcement, but also as symbols of royal or state authority. Their architecture, often sober but functional, reflected their dual vocation: utilitarian and representative. In the context of Drôme and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, this former gendarmerie is part of a network of civil monuments marking the evolution of local institutions in the 17th and 18th centuries.
