Origin and history
The house located at 18 rue Jules-Legrand (formerly rue de l'Hôpital) in Lorient is an 18th-century building, typical of the civil architecture of this period. It is distinguished by an entrance door surmounted by a wrought iron balcony, decorated with rounded motifs and supported by white stone consoles. A carved medallion, also surmounted by ironwork, adds to its decorative character. The windows on the first floor, framing the central span, are equipped with wrought iron benches, treated in the same style as the balcony.
Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 9 December 1929, this house illustrates the local craftsmanship and know-how of the blacksmiths and sculptors of the time. Only the facade, with its wrought iron balcony, is protected under the Historical Monuments (cadastral reference BN 53). The exact address, 18 Jules-Legrand Street, corresponds to the old hospital street, perhaps reflecting a past hospital or charitable vocation of the neighborhood.
Architectural elements, such as white stone consoles and ironworks, bear witness to an attenuated baroque influence, common in Breton port cities in the 18th century. Lorient, a strategic port, then enjoyed a prosperity linked to the maritime trade and the Compagnie des Indes, which is reflected in the care given to the decoration of bourgeois houses. The location accuracy, estimated at 5/10, suggests minor uncertainty about the exact location, although the cadastral address is clearly identified.
