Origin and history
The house at 17 Rue Curiale, located in Thann (Haut-Rhin), is a historical monument whose facade and structure date back to the 15th century. Its rear gable wall rests on the city's first enclosure, built in 1290, while its garden occupies the former defensive ditch. This three-storey building, made of sandstone stones from the Vosges, features a facade adorned with an oriel and a triangular scallop with moulure cornice, typical of medieval Alsatian architecture.
Originally, the house housed a grocery store-inn named "At the Cathedral" in 1860, before becoming a hostel known as the Alsatian "Schnaps Kapella" (the chapel of the schnapps). Its history reflects the evolution of urban usage, from commerce to accommodation. The frame, ranked among the oldest in Alsace (15th century), illustrates the technique of first generation force legs, rare example preserved.
Partially classified in 1934 (facade and oriel), the protection of the monument was extended in 2009 to the entire building, including roofs, interiors and frame. This ranking underscores its heritage importance, linked to both its medieval civil architecture and its integration into Thann's historical defensive system. Curial Street, on the other hand, derives its name from the former presbytery located in No. 1, reflecting the ecclesiastical influence on the local toponymy.
Archivistic sources, such as the CRMH protection file (2008) or Charles-Laurent Salch's works on the ramparts of Alsace, document his role in medieval urban planning. The bombings of 1914-1916, mentioned in the communal archives, also recall the vicissitudes suffered by the Thanese heritage during modern conflicts.
