Origin and history
The Domat House is a private building located in Mirefleurs, in the department of Puy-de-Dôme in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Partly dating from the 15th century, it was redesigned in the 17th and 18th centuries. This building is distinguished by its tower decorated with 225 graffiti at the lead mine and blood, some of which could represent Blaise Pascal. These drawings, made with red ochre or lead, include caricatural heads and various motifs, reflecting an artistic and intellectual occupation.
The house belonged to Jean Domat, a jurisconsult and close to Blaise Pascal, who entrusted him with his personal papers before his death. This historical relationship contributed to its classification as a Historic Monument in 2000. Today, the building houses the headquarters of the Association for Iron Age Research in Auvergne (ARAFA) and has been used as a shelter for archaeologists' teams. Its spiral staircase leads to a circular room where the graffiti, protected, fully cover the walls.
The inscription under the title of Historical Monuments concerns not only the structure itself, but also its interior elements: woodwork, chimneys, alcoves, paintings and graffiti of the tower. The exact address, 2 rue de la Grande-Chareyre, and its Insee code (63227) confirm its anchoring in the local heritage of Puy-de-Dôme. The hypotheses about Pascal's representation among the drawings add a mysterious dimension to this place full of history.
