Origin and history

The corner house, located in Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat, dates from the 4th quarter of the 13th century or the beginning of the 14th century. From an elongated rectangular plane, it was originally opened on the street by broken arch commercial bays. The groined berries, adorned with openworked tympanums and surmounted by broken arches resting on columns and capitals, still remain on the gable and at each level. The cellar, vaulted ridges, comprises two spans.

According to tradition, this house would have housed the city's consuls, although this assignment remains uncertain. The anterior facade and interior structure were completely remodelled in the 4th quarter of the 19th century, partially changing its original appearance. The façade on the Place de la Collégiale was inscribed in the Historical Monuments by decree of November 2, 1926, while the 13th century side façade was protected on September 16, 1949.

The building illustrates the medieval civil architecture of the area, with typical elements such as the geminied bays and the vaults of the ridges. Its location on Place Gay-Lussac, formerly Place de la Collégiale, highlights its importance in the historic urban fabric of Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat.
