Origin and history

This house, located in the Place de l'Hôtel-de-Ville in Lodève, in the Hérault, dates mainly from the 19th century, although its initial structure dates back to the late 18th century. It underwent major changes during the next century, including the addition of a wrought iron balcony, the work of local ironmaker Benjamin Cusson. This balcony, dated from 1780, is distinguished by its square iron frame and its repelled sheet decorations representing rinceaux, crowns, palms and roses.

The balcony, a protected part of the house, was classified as Historic Monument by order of 14 January 1930 because of its artistic and technical value. The repelled copper medallions that adorn him testify to the exceptional know-how of Benjamin Cusson, a ironsmith based in Lodève. The balcony grille, although earlier than the main period of the house, is harmoniously integrated into the renovated 19th century architecture.

The location of the house on the central square of Lodève suggests its importance in the urban fabric of the time. The available coordinates also place the monument near the rue du Quatre September, confirming its anchoring in the historic heart of the city. The accuracy of this location is estimated as fair, with a score of 5 out of 10 depending on the sources consulted.
