Origin and history
The house at 3 rue du Général-Maureilhan in Montpellier dates from the 18th century. It is located in an area formerly outside the medieval city, where properties were often associated with large gardens. This monument still retains a green space of origin, accessible by two portals. The one overlooking the street of General Maureilhan is distinguished by its neat carved decoration, typical of the art rock or neoclassical nascent.
The main gate features a protruding, unimposted, molded frame with a key adorned with a feminine head. Two flower-decorated consoles support a circular pediment, whose mouling alternates nets and doucins. The tympanum, the most remarkable element, represents two allegorical loves: one pressing grapes in a vase to symbolize the Autumn, the other warming up in front of a brasero for the Winter. These figures frame a central cartridge with a partially erased monogram, a witness to an owner or family that is now anonymous.
Ranked Historic Monument by decree of 16 June 1965, only the portal with its carved tympanum (cadastre H 409) enjoys official protection. The ensemble evokes the affluent 18th century Montpellieran domestic architecture, where secondary residences or "houses of the fields" coexisted with gardens, leisure and production spaces for local elites. The accuracy of the current location is considered poor (note 5/10), and the corresponding address remains that of the Merimée base.
