Origin and history
The houses of 13 and 15 Place du Marchix are two emblematic monuments of the city of Fougères, in Ille-et-Vilaine. Built between the 15th and 16th centuries, they illustrate the civil architecture of this period in Brittany. Their location, just 150 metres from the Château de Fougères, highlights their integration into the medieval and reborn urban fabric of the city.
These houses were partially protected as historical monuments by an order of 22 March 1930, specifically covering their facades and roofs. Their registration reflects their heritage value, although available sources do not detail their architectural history or historical occupants. Their presence in a central place suggests a role in the commercial or social life of Fougères.
At the time of their construction, Fougères was a dynamic fortified city, marked by artisanal and commercial activities. Bourgeois or urban houses, like these, often served as housing for local notables or as places of exchange. Their conservation makes it possible today to study urban evolution and lifestyles in Brittany at the hinge of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
