Origin and history
Marty Jacques House is a historic monument located in Villefranche-de-Conflent, in the department of the Pyrénées-Orientales. This building, whose oldest element is a gate in the middle of a curved frame, bears witness to a civil architecture typical of the region. The present façade preserves only this door as original vestige, reflecting the transformations undergone over the centuries.
The house consists of a main housing body and a backyard, a common organisation in the fortified medieval towns like Villefranche-de-Conflent. The gate, classified by decree of 21 October 1965, is the only protected element of the monument. Its architectural style, sober but characteristic, suggests construction or renovation during the modern era, although the exact date of its construction is not specified in the available sources.
Villefranche-de-Conflent, a UNESCO World Heritage site for its ramparts and medieval urbanism, houses several old houses like this one. These buildings illustrated the daily life of the inhabitants, often artisans or merchants, in a village marked by its strategic role at the borders of Roussillon and Cerdagne. Marty Jacques House, although partially modified, remains an example of this local vernacular heritage.
