Origin and history

The House of the Monks, located in the Crest in Puy-de-Dôme, is a 15th century building probably linked to the local priory dependent on Benedictines of Issoire. This monument has retained its original layout, with typical architectural elements such as monumental chimneys and dust-causing windows. The murals discovered on the second floor, dating from the same period, represent religious themes (Saint Christophe, Saint Marie-Madeleine, Annunciation), attesting to his ecclesiastical use.

Classified as a Historic Monument in 2004, the house is protected in its entirety, including its interior decorations (wives vaults, fireplaces, paintings). These characteristics make it a rare testimony of medieval civil architecture associated with a Benedictine priory. Its location on Beaudonnat Place, in the heart of Crest, highlights its historic importance in the urban fabric.

The Benedictines of Issoire, an influential religious order in the Middle Ages, had several priories in Auvergne. The House of the Monks illustrates their presence in the region, with decorative and structural elements reflecting their spirituality and community organization. The inscription under the title of Historical Monuments guarantees the preservation of this unique heritage, combining religious history and vernacular architecture.
