Origin and history
The 16th century house of Ancizan is a listed historical monument, located in the department of Hautes-Pyrénées. It is distinguished by its high attices covered with a roof with broken panels, its gables with redents and a large windowed window-light. This skylight, made of cut stone, is pierced with three holes, an architectural detail shared with the Maison Saint-Exupère d'Arreau. Upstairs, a large door window and lintels decorated with a braided arch remind the late Gothic style. Some openings, however, do not respect this original style.
Inside, two doors and two chimneys have neat mouldings, while a coarsely carved head surmounts one of the doors. The lintel of the small gate on street bears the date of 1525, although its authenticity is uncertain, this lintel can be a re-use. In 1831 the house belonged to Joseph Oustalet. The facades, roofs, two internal doors and two old chimneys have been protected since a decree of 6 September 1978.
The building illustrates the transition between Gothic and Renaissance, with decorative elements such as sills and arches in braid. Its architecture reflects the local influences and construction techniques of the period, while at the same time reflecting the evolution of aesthetic tastes in the 16th century. The approximate location, 3 Rue de la Place Durer in Ancizan, places this monument in the heart of a village of the Hautes-Pyrénées, in a rural context marked by medieval and reborn history of the region.
