Origin and history
The house at 38bis Avenue de la République in Clermont-Ferrand is a Louis XV-style building built on the edge of the 19th and 20th centuries. Its architecture is distinguished by a massed plane, asymmetrical volumes with marked drops, and broken roofs with very high breaks. The bays, of various dimensions, add to the originality of its silhouette. Inside, a living room stands out with a ceiling, fireplace and Renaissance-style stained glass windows opening onto a winter garden. These interior elements, as well as the decorations (glasses, woodwork, fireplaces, staircase), have been protected since the entire house was registered by order of 12 February 2002.
The building is attributed to architect G. Maschat, and its property is owned by a state public institution. The sculpted decoration, applied on complex volumes, reflects an accomplished aesthetic research, mixing classical influences and eclecticism typical of the pivotal period between the two centuries. The location, although noted as "passable" (level 5/10) in the sources, corresponds to the official address recorded in the Merimée base, confirming its anchoring in downtown Clermont-Ferrand.
The house illustrates a hybrid architectural heritage, where the Louis XV style dialogues with Renaissance reinterpretations, typical of the formal experiments of the late nineteenth century. Its classification as Historic Monument underlines its heritage value, both for its facades and for its rich interior decorations, preserved in their entirety. The photographs available, licensed under Creative Commons, highlight these characteristics, although the accuracy of the location remains perfectable according to the sources consulted.
