Origin and history

The house at 14 rue Lainerie in Lyon is a 15th century civil building. It is an example of medieval domestic architecture in the historic centre of the city. Its facades, characteristic of this period, were recognized for their heritage value, leading to their registration as Historic Monuments by order of 28 May 1927.

Lyon, in the 15th century, was an economically and commercially dynamic city, thanks in particular to its role in the production and trade of silk and textiles. The houses of that time often reflected the prosperity of the merchants and craftsmen who lived there. This type of building, although modest in appearance, could house both living spaces, workshops and warehouses, illustrating the versatility of medieval urban buildings.

The location of this house, in the current 5th district (formerly the 1st district according to the sources), places the building in a historical area close to the Saône. This area, marked by narrow streets and half-timbered or stone buildings, still preserves today traces of medieval urbanism. The accuracy of its geographical location is estimated as "passable" (note of 5/10), which can be explained by the successive urban transformations that Lyon has experienced over the centuries.
