The house with wooden panels and torchis with its brick sidewalk, located 41 rue Saint-Martin (cad. AL 601): inscription by order of 5 April 2019

Origin and history

The log house and torchi of Saint-Omer is a historic monument located at 41 rue Saint-Martin. This type of construction, characteristic of the northern regions, combines a wooden structure and a filling of torchi, a material composed of earth, straw and clay. The building, with its brick sidewalk, was registered by ministerial decree on April 5, 2019, highlighting its local heritage importance.

In Nord-Pas-de-Calais, wood-paned houses were common until the 19th century, reflecting an architectural tradition adapted to local resources. These homes, which were often modest, housed artisans or traders, and their preservation makes it possible today to understand the way of life and the construction techniques of the past. Their location in the city centre, as here in Saint-Omer, reflects their integration into the medieval and modern urban fabric.
