Fronts and roofs (Box AM 138): inscription by order of 18 October 1971

Origin and history

This house, located in Tonnerre in the department of Yonne (89), is an example of civil architecture of the late sixteenth century. It was built during the 4th quarter of the 16th century, a period marked by the transition between Renaissance and modern times, where bourgeois houses multiplied in the cities of Burgundy. Its inscription as a Historic Monument in 1971 bears witness to its heritage importance, especially for its facades and roofs, protected by ministerial decree.

At the end of the 16th century, Tonnerre, then under the influence of Burgundy, was a dynamic city where commercial and craft activities flourished. The houses of that time often reflected the social status of their owners, with their facades and characteristic roofs. This type of building, typical of Burgundy urban housing, served both as a residence and sometimes as a place of economic activity for wealthy families in the region.

The inscription of this house as the Historic Monuments in 1971 preserved an architectural testimony of this pivotal period.
