Origin and history
The house of Égleny, located in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, is a remarkable example of bourgeois architecture of the 3rd quarter of the 19th century. Built in 1865, it is distinguished by its facade decorated with refined sculptures and its two octagonal turrets, reflecting exceptional craftsmanship. The high-quality limestone used bears witness to a desire for durability and aesthetics, characteristic of the affluent homes of the time.
This residence was designed by Auxerrois architect Grégoire Roux for a resident of the fortified village in Paris. His style, combining harmonious proportions and careful decor, illustrates the social ascent of some provincials who made a fortune in the capital. The house thus embodies the link between the Burgundy countryside and the Parisian urban influences, typical of this period of economic transformation.
Ranked Historic Monument by decree of 30 April 1999, the protection specifically concerns the main facade with its turrets and roofs. This classification underlines the heritage value of the building, both for its architecture and for its testimony on the bourgeois life of the Second Empire. The precise address, 6 Place du Marché, anchored the monument in the historical fabric of the village of Égleny, in the department of Yonne.
