Jean du Chièvre - Bishop of Bourges Sponsor and builder of houses.

Origin and history

The houses at 5 Rue Bourbonnoux in Bourges are an emblematic historical monument of 16th century civil architecture. Built by Jean du Chièvre, a city alderman, they illustrate the techniques and style of the French Renaissance. The ground floor features a shop under a low arcade, while a door leads to a corridor lit by a meneau bay. Architectural details, such as ionic capital pilasters, highlight the classical influence of the era.

The second floor has retained its original cross-section, and the attic houses a skylight decorated with pilasters and a pediment. In the inner courtyard, old openings and a covered well remain, the latter carrying the shield with the arms of Jean du Chièvre. These elements reflect the high social status of the sponsor and the importance of the houses in the urban fabric of Bourges during the Renaissance.

Ranked Historic Monument by order of January 10, 1928, facades, roofs and wells are protected for their heritage value. The location, although documented, remains approximate according to available sources, with a map accuracy considered fair (note 5/10).
