Origin and history

The log house of Rieux-Volvestre is a historical monument located in a medieval fortified town. It illustrates the civil architecture of the late 15th and early 16th centuries, with a characteristic facade in wood panels with grids and brick filling. This type of construction was common in fortified cities, mixing bourgeois houses and popular dwellings, often in torchi and wood.

In the Middle Ages, Rieux-Volvestre was a city protected by ramparts, where houses of different social classes lived. The wood panels, a common technique, allowed rapid and economical construction, while offering a distinctive aesthetic. The house, classified as a Historic Monument in 1947, bears witness to this period when urban planning was marked by the density and mix of habitats.

The protection of this monument by order of 1 October 1947 underlines its heritage importance. Today, it remains a tangible vestige of the medieval urban organization in Occitanie, where wooden houses played a central role in everyday life, sheltering artisans, merchants and families. Its location on Lastic Square, in the heart of the city, strengthens its historical and cultural anchor.
