Edmé Melkior (dit Monsieur Léonce) - Engineer and builder Designed this house late nineteenth.

Origin and history

The house at 6 rue du Fort in Cayenne was built at the extreme end of the 19th century, more precisely during the 4th quarter of this century. It is located in one of the oldest urbanised districts of the city, thus testifying to the architectural and social evolution of Cayenne at this time. Its location, in an area marked by a sustainable human occupation, makes it a representative example of the local built heritage of the late nineteenth century.

The construction of this house is attributed to Edmé Melkior, also known as Monsieur Léonce, a Guyanese engineer. The latter played a key role in the construction of this building, which was partially protected by the Historical Monuments. In fact, the facades and roofs of the house were registered by order of 31 August 1995, thus highlighting their heritage value. This official recognition highlights the importance of this building in the architectural landscape of Cayenne.

Available information indicates that the location of the house is relatively well documented, with an exact address and approximate GPS coordinates. However, the accuracy of this location is considered "fair" according to the assessment criteria, which may reflect minor uncertainties as to its exact location. The house is also associated with a Creative Commons license for available images, which facilitates the dissemination of its visual heritage.
