Origin and history
The house located at 16 Place Lamennais in Ploërmel is a building built mainly in the 17th century, although architectural elements suggest a partial origin in the 2nd half of the 16th century. Its stone façade, protected by a decree of 9 June 1925, is distinguished by a ground floor, two floors and an attic. The central axis highlights an entrance door framed with two spans of superimposed pilaster windows, topped by a circular pediment decorated with shells in the eardrum. A frieze decorated with a shield with waves of ribbons and a central skylight connected to the pediments complete this remarkable architectural ensemble.
The house underwent major alterations in the 19th century, including partial reconstruction in the 2nd half of the 19th century, with the exception of the earlier elevation. The amendments include the addition of the 3rd level central bay and the central skylight, while retaining original elements such as pilasters and pediment. These transformations reflect a desire for modernization while preserving the historical character of the building, typical of the Breton bourgeois houses of the time.
Classified as a historical monument for its southern façade (cadastre AC 405), this house illustrates the architectural evolution between Renaissance and modern times in Brittany. Its inscription in 1925 underscores its heritage value, linked to the quality of its carved decorations (shells, shields, ribbons) and its symmetrical organization. The official address, Place Lamennais in Ploërmel (Morbihan), makes it a local witness to the urban and social history of the region.
