Origin and history
The house in Martray Square in Paimpol is a 16th century civil building. This building, typical of the Breton Renaissance architecture, was inscribed under the title of Historical Monuments by order of 22 March 1930. Its inscription bears witness to its heritage importance in the urban landscape of Paimpol, the coastal town of Côtes-d'Armor.
In the 16th century Paimpol was a dynamic city linked to fishing and maritime trade. The houses of that time often reflected the prosperity of local merchants or shipowners. This type of building served both as a dwelling and as a place of professional activity, illustrating the close link between domestic and economic life in the Breton ports of the time.
The location of this house, close to the church, suggests its integration into the historic heart of the city. Its classification in 1930 is part of a desire to preserve the Breton architectural heritage, while many old buildings were threatened by the urban transformations of the 20th century.
