Origin and history
The house at 16 rue Jenner in Molsheim (Bas-Rhin) is a large house built in the 2nd quarter of the 17th century, more precisely in 1628, as indicated by the date engraved on the oriel. It features a drop-on-street with a side entrance passage adorned with a carved arch in full hanger. The rectangular oriel, decorated with ironwork motifs, and the polygonal staircase turret (with helical staircase) are remarkable elements. The ground floor, entirely arched, housed an old cellar.
This house was initially the residence of canon-counts of the chapter of the great choir of the cathedral of Strasbourg. In 1860 it became the property of the cooper Antoine Fritz, who placed his emblem and initials on the carved slab of the turret. The arrow was later restored. Changes in the 19th century, such as a courier, have since been removed. Two old chimneys, now exposed to the Molsheim Museum, come from this house.
The building has been listed as historical monuments since 1929. Originally, it was surrounded by a large garden extending to Rue Saint-Martin. The building body at the back of the courtyard is a modern addition. The accuracy of its location is estimated to be fair (note 5/10), and its official address is confirmed by Merimée bases and local sources.
