Origin and history

The house at 28 Main Street in Oberbronn (Bas-Rhin) is a remarkable example of Alsatian civil architecture from the 16th and 17th centuries. Built in 1555 as attests the vintage engraved on a stone on the ground floor, it combines a stone ground floor with a decorative wood panel floor, overflowing on three sides. A drop-on-street lodge, probably dating from 1609 (date inscribed on the cornet post), and a 1717 entrance door complete this set, marked with butcher emblems (cuteret, knife or rifle), suggesting the occupation of its owner.

The building, with a trapezoidal plan and a street corner, features a two-way gable and bays modified in the 19th century. A small square wing and a perpendicular building were transformed after 1945. The facades with oriel and the roof were protected by an order of inscription for historical monuments on May 11, 1932, highlighting its heritage interest.

The decorative elements and engraved dates reflect the architectural and social evolution of the house, linked to local artisans or traders, probably butchers. These details and subsequent transformations illustrate the continuous adaptation of Alsatian urban habitats to the needs and styles of each era.
