Origin and history

The house at the sign of the rising Cerf, located at 26 rue du Mining in La Rochelle, is a building built in the 3rd quarter of the 18th century. It is distinguished by a sign in bas-relief representing a deer climbing on a mountain, accompanied by the inscription "The rising serf". This architectural detail, typical of the bourgeois houses of the time, reflects the importance of signs to identify buildings in shopping towns like La Rochelle.

The building was listed as historic monuments by order of 27 June 1928. This protection specifically concerns the arcade and carved sign, highlighting their heritage value. La Rochelle, the major port of the Atlantic façade, had many houses with signs, often linked to artisanal or commercial activities.

Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, also mention an approximate address from GPS coordinates (24 bis rue du Mining), although the official address recorded at the Merimée base is 26 rue du Mining.
