Façade (Case HV 237): entry by order of 17 April 1931
Origin and history
The house at 23 rue Mirebeau in Bourges is an architectural testimony of the second half of the 15th century. Built after the 1487 fire that ravaged part of the city, it reflects the reconstruction techniques of the time. Its distinctive elements include banded poles decorated with prismatic motifs, topped with consoles supporting the second floor sandstone. These stylistic details, typical of the late Middle Ages, underline the desire to quickly restore homes while integrating neat decors.
The façade of this house, classified as Historic Monument by order of 17 April 1931, is the only protected element of the building. Its listing in the inventory of historic monuments demonstrates its heritage interest, particularly in its state of conservation and its illustration of post-disaster constructive methods. The approximate location, noted as "passable" (level 5/10), and the differences between the official address (23 Mirebeau Street) and the GPS coordinates (29 Mirebeau Street) suggest minor geographical uncertainties, common for older buildings in urban areas.
The historical context of Bourges at the end of the 15th century was marked by an economic and urban recovery after the unrest of the Hundred Years War. Wooden houses, such as this one, were common and reflected both the practical needs of the inhabitants and their social status. Although the sources do not mention the sponsor or the original occupants, the building is part of a larger architectural complex, characteristic of the prosperous towns of the Loire Valley under the influence of the Valois.
