Origin and history
The house of Rieux-Volvestre, dated from the 15th century, is a typical example of the medieval civil architecture of the region. It is distinguished by its wooden facade with a brick filling, a common technique for bourgeois houses and popular houses of the time. This type of construction reflects available materials and local know-how, adapted to the needs of a fortified city.
In the Middle Ages, Rieux-Volvestre was a city protected by ramparts, where houses of different social classes lived. The torch houses and wooden panels, like this one, dominated the urban landscape, providing a solid and economical structure. Most of these buildings were used as both housing and work space for artisans or merchants, thus participating in the economic life of the city.
The façade and covers of this house were inscribed as a Historic Monument by order of 11 April 1950. This protection reflects its heritage importance, preserving a tangible fragment of the architectural and urban history of the Haute-Garonne. Today, it remains a valuable testimony of medieval construction techniques in southwestern France.
