Façade sur Cour et Roof Corresponding (Case BH 79): inscription by order of 28 May 1979

Origin and history

The house at 16 rue de la Victoire in Tarbes is a rare example of medieval civil architecture preserved in this city. Its courtyard façade features two sill windows, characteristic of the late Gothic period, as well as a beam decorated with arches in a braid. These elements make it a unique architectural testimony in Tarbes, where no other house has such windows.

Classified as a Historic Monument, this house was partially protected by order of 28 May 1979, specifically covering its facade on courtyard and the corresponding roof. The cadastre identifies the property under BH 79. Although its detailed history remains partially documented, its inscription underlines its heritage importance in the urban landscape of Tarbes, Occitanie.

The location of the house, in the Hautes-Pyrénées, is in a regional context marked by medieval architecture often linked to commercial and craft activities. The half-timbered or Gothic houses, like this one, reflected the social status of their owners, often merchants or local notables. Tarbes, a strategic city between plain and mountain, concentrated these houses around central streets, such as Rue de la Victoire.
