Origin and history

The house located on the Place de l'Église in Saint-Sernin-sur-Rance, classified as Monument Historique, has a unified facade despite apparent disparities. Its ground floor opens on the street with three large bays: two covered with segmentar arches with irregular harps (suggesting a later recovery), and a third with a lintel surmounted by a discharge arch. The adjacent door, chamfered and covered with a lintel, completes this set. These details, such as the IHS box, could date from a post-construction modification.

Upstairs, the windows on the first level display cross-stick frames and prismatic bases, with staggered, prominent supports. The one on the right is crowned with a curvilinear mess and pinnacles, while the one on the left has a mulled larmis at right angle. The second floor, more sober, features two stone windows whose mouldings extend those of the underlying windows. The threshold of these bays has been modified to accommodate a balcony supported by iron consoles, which has been added a posteriori.

The dating of this house oscillates between the late 15th and early 16th centuries, a pivotal period between the flamboyant Gothic and the early Renaissance. Its inscription in the inventory of Historical Monuments by decree of 26 March 1934 concerns only the facade, stressing its architectural interest. The building illustrates the successive adaptations of a medieval urban residence, where commercial (shops on the ground floor) and residential functions coexist.

Saint-Sernin-sur-Rance, located in the present department of Aveyron (former Midi-Pyrénées region, today Occitanie), was at that time a dynamic town linked to regional exchanges. Wood and stone houses, such as this one, reflected the relative prosperity of local merchants or artisans. Their facade, often decorated, also served as a showcase for their activities, while marking their social status in the community.
