Façade: entry by order of 17 April 1950

Origin and history

This 15th century house, located in the Gorges du Tarn Causses, more precisely in Sainte-Enimie (Lozère), is distinguished by its limestone facade. It is pierced by a door giving access to a circular stone staircase, with a full core. This door, composed of two chamfered pedestals, supports a low arched lintel decorated with two small archvolts and a moulding in basket handle. An empty shield, placed in the centre of the lintel, adds a decorative touch.

The façade of this house was inscribed as a Historic Monument by order of 17 April 1950. This classification reflects its architectural interest, especially for its carved elements and stone staircase, characteristic of the civil buildings of the late Middle Ages in this region. The precise location, 5041 Place du Plot in Sainte-Enimie, is indicated in the Mérimée archives.

The Gorges du Tarn Causses, in Occitanie, were at that time a rural area marked by an agropastoral economy. Stone houses, like this one, often served as housing for local families or as places related to artisanal and commercial activities. Their architecture reflected both the practical needs and social status of their owners, sometimes incorporating decorative elements such as badges or mouldings, symbols of prestige.
