Origin and history
The house at 8, rue des Pères is a historic monument located in Saverne, in the department of Bas-Rhin, in the Grand Est region. Built in the 3rd quarter of the 16th century, it has a main facade with an oriel, typical of the Alsatian civil architecture of the Renaissance. A stone embedded in the gable bears the date of 1562, as well as a professional emblem or partially legible weapons, suggesting an origin related to a notable craftsman or family of the time.
The building initially formed an ensemble with the house at 13 rue des Frères, according to historical assumptions. Its inscription in the title of historical monuments, by order of 12 October 1929, specifically protects its main facade and its oriel. The house is associated with a certain Rathsamhausen Stein, although its exact role (commander, builder or owner) is not clearly specified in the available sources.
Saverne, an Alsatian city marked by its medieval and reborn history, had many half-timbered and stone houses dating back to that period. These dwellings often reflected the prosperity of local artisans, merchants or nobles. The house on 8 rue des Pères illustrates this architectural heritage, combining Germanic and French influences, characteristic of the region at that time.
