Origin and history

The house at 5 Place 1830, at the corner of Emile-Nau Street in Quintin (Côtes-d'Armor), is a typical building of 17th century Breton civil architecture. It is approximately square in shape and is distinguished by its wooden and lattice walls covered with slate, as well as by a granite gable. The vertical shaft windows on the first and second floors (attic) illustrate the constructive techniques of the era. This building bears witness to the preserved heritage of Quintin, a town built in the Duchy in 1691 and rich in 16th and 17th century buildings.

The partial protection of the house (façades and roofs with return to Emile-Nau Street) was formalized by a classification order for historical monuments on 21 December 1977. This classification underlines its heritage value, particularly for its state of conservation and its representation of bourgeois or artisanal houses in the region. The building is part of an urban complex marked by the history of the Duchy of Quintin, where wood-paned architecture was common for homes and public buildings.

No information is available on original owners or specific uses of the house in the 17th century. However, its central location near Place 1830 suggests a role in the social or economic life of the city. The materials used, such as granite for chaining and Lardian for covering, reflect the local resources and know-how of the Breton artisans of the time.
