Origin and history

This medieval house, located in the upper town of Provins, dates from the thirteenth century. It is distinguished by its vaulted cellar, composed of six barlong spans covered with arch vaults. The capitals of the pillars, decorated with superimposed hooks and five-lobed leaves, bear witness to an architectural know-how typical of this period. The cellar is the only protected element of the monument, inscribed by ministerial decree in 1931.

The exact location of this house is uncertain, although two addresses are mentioned: 7 rue de Jouy and 2 rue de l'Éperonnerie. These geographic inconsistencies reflect the limitations of the available sources, with a location accuracy considered poor (note 5/10). Provins, a prosperous medieval city, was then a major commercial hub, and vaulted cellars often served as storage or work spaces for merchants.

The inscription of the cellar as a Historic Monument in 1931 highlights its heritage interest, particularly for its architectural details. The arch vaults and carved patterns of the capitals illustrate the influence of the nascent Gothic art, common in the region in the thirteenth century. No information is available on the current use of the building or its accessibility to the public.
