The right part of the façade and the corresponding roof pan (Box AB 259): inscription by decree of 22 March 1965

Origin and history

The house opposite Saint-Sauveur church in Corlay, in the Côtes-d'Armor department in Brittany, dates from the 1st quarter of the 17th century. This civil building, typical of the architecture of this period, is distinguished by its central location in the village, in direct view with the main religious building of the commune. Its partial inscription in the title of historical monuments, which took place by decree of 22 March 1965, specifically concerns the right part of its façade and the corresponding roof strip, thus underlining the heritage value of these architectural elements.

Corlay, like many small Breton towns in the 17th century, was marked by a predominantly rural and artisanal economy. The houses of that time often served as a place of life and work for peasant families or local artisans. Their proximity to the church reflected the importance of religious life in social and urban organization. These houses, constructed of local materials such as granite or shale, were designed to withstand the ocean climate while meeting the daily needs of their occupants.

The partial protection of this house in 1965 is part of a broader approach to preserving Breton architectural heritage. By that date, many civil and religious buildings in the region had benefited from similar measures aimed at safeguarding the material testimonies of past centuries. The inscription in the title of historical monuments allows not only to protect the remarkable elements of the building, but also to document its history and evolution, thus providing a window on the way of life and construction techniques of the modern era in Brittany.
