House of the 16th century called Pages: inscription by decree of 12 June 1926

Origin and history

La Maison du XVIe siècle, dit des Pages, is located in Chenonceaux, in the department of Indre-et-Loire (37), in the region Centre-Val de Loire. This civil monument, representative of Renaissance home architecture, bears witness to the local built heritage of this period. Its listing in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 12 June 1926 underlines its heritage importance, although the available sources do not specify its original use or its possible owners.

Chenonceaux, close to the famous castle of the same name, was in the sixteenth century a dynamic place linked to the royal court and the aristocracy. The houses of that time, like the Pages, often served as houses for servants, artisans or pages – young nobles in formation – attached to the great lords. Their preservation offers an overview of the living conditions and urban planning of the Renaissance in Touraine, a region marked by its political and cultural role under Francis I and its successors.

Current data, notably from the Merimée database and Monumentum, indicate an approximate location (455 Augustin Thierry Street in Amboise being an erroneous or obsolete address), with a geographical accuracy considered "passable" (note 5/10). No information is available on its access to the public, its current vocation (housing, museum, etc.), or possible modern amenities. The house thus remains an unknown but protected vestige of the rich tourist heritage.
