Émile Chartier (Alain) - Philosopher and writer
Born in this house in 1868.
Origin and history
The home of the philosopher Alain, located 3 rue de la Comédie in Mortagne-au-Perche, is a modest building built around the 1850s. It is not distinguished by its architecture, but as a place of memory linked to Émile Chartier (1868-1951), who adopted the pseudonym Alain in 1900. The building, covered with a croup roof, retains a south façade opening onto a courtyard accessible by a curved gate, as well as some original interior arrangements.
The house was classified as a Historic Monument in 1995 for its facades and roofs, without extensive protection inside. Owned by an association, it symbolizes the intellectual heritage of Alain, a normalist and prolific author, whose reflections on philosophy, politics and education marked the twentieth century. Its inscription in the title of historical monuments underlines its heritage importance as a witness to the life of a major thinker.
The building, lacking remarkable architectural features, draws its value from its link with Émile Chartier. The inner courtyard and the entrance gate, typical elements of the 19th century bourgeois constructions in the region, recall the living environment of the philosopher's childhood. Today, the house remains a place of commemoration, although its access and uses (visits, rentals) are not specified in the available sources.
