Origin and history
The 16th century house, known as the Sénéchal House, is a historic monument located in Carhaix-Plouguer, Brittany. Its construction dates back to the 16th century, as confirmed by architectural and dendrochronological studies. The main facade, with remarkable symmetry, features a granite ground floor with a central door in the middle of the hanger and two windows decorated with Renaissance pilasters. The upper floors, in corbellation, are supported by prominent beams and ground sandstones, while the posts and leggings of the windows are decorated with cariatides.
A dendrochronological study conducted in 2019 provided a precise date for the implementation of wood floors between 1582 and 1584. This technical detail confirms the belonging of the building at the end of the French Renaissance. The facade and its part in return on Félix-Faure Street were classified as Historic Monument, in 1922 and 1976 respectively, highlighting their exceptional heritage value.
The building illustrates the influence of Renaissance architectural styles in Brittany, with decorative elements such as carved pilasters and archvolts. Today, owned by the municipality of Carhaix-Plouguer, this house bears witness to the artisanal know-how of the period and the importance of urban constructions in Breton cities in the 16th century.
